Abstract

We studied the effect of Levetiracetam (LEV) add-on therapy in 21 patients (9 M;12 F; mean age 29.3 yrs; range 10-49 yrs), mainly affected with partial refractory epilepsy with secondary bilateral synchrony (SBS), by evaluating clinical and EEG aspects. A reduction in seizure frequency > 50% was achieved by 52% of the patients; furthermore in 28% of the patients there was an important reduction in seizure severity. As for tolerability, 9 patients complained mild side effects, only 1 discontinued LEV because of severe tiredness, somnolence and ataxia. In 58% of the cases with SBS on EEG we observed a decrement both of interictal epileptiform discharges and SBS.
