Abstract
We describe the echocardiographic detection of a right heart thromboembolus in an 84-year-old patient admitted following syncope and recent pulmonary embolism. Treatment with tissue plasminogen activator was followed by complete resolution of the mass and a favourable clinical outcome. This therapeutic approach is discussed in the light of the therapeutic choices currently offered for this increasingly identified, high-risk condition. Our report confirms the emerging evidence of a favourable risk-to-benefit ratio for thrombolysis in the elderly.
