Abstract

Rapid diazepam (DZP) introduction (rectal route) was investigated in 104 children during EEG epileptic 'status' with EEG and pharmacological monitoring. Our data show a strong correlation between the characteristics of the background EEG paroxysmal activity and the response to DZP. Cases with a hypsarrhythmic EEG pattern under the age of 12 months and cases with unorganised paroxysmal activity and irregular background activity over the age of 12 months are insensitive or slightly sensitive to DZP. The possible physiopathological mechanisms are discussed.
