Abstract

The identification of acute stroke patients eligible for fibrinolytic treatment is actually based on clinical and CT findings. The use of ultrasounds examination (US), Echo Color Doppler of the Supra Aortic Vessels (ECD-SAV) and Transcranial Color Coded Duplex (TCCD), can play a significant role in the diagnostic process as well as in the outcome evaluation of these patients. Aim of this prospective, multicenter, observational study (ELIGIBLE Study) was to assess the feasibility of US, within three hours from the stroke onset, and its prognostic role. The ELIGIBLE Study demonstrated the feasibility in clinical practice of US in the diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke, identifying different subtypes of vascular lesions, characterized by different outcome. This is the first study correlating stroke subtypes, identified during US examination within three hours, with prognostic and outcome measures.
