Abstract
The most relevant aspects in the epidemiology of hepatocellular carcinoma are briefly reviewed. There has been no substantially new information in this field in the last ten years except for the discovery of the link between hepatitis C virus and the tumour. Whether screening for hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotics correlates with abetter survival when the tumour is diagnosed, is still open to debate. Further advances are eagerly awaited from recent progress in molecular biology.
