The 2001 ILAE Proposal was suitably applied in 831 adult patients referred to a third level centre. The lobar classification of focal epilepsies was conversely applicable in less than 50%. About 30% of the patients with focal epilepsy was judged drug-resistant. The presence of a known causative factor and the infantile onset were significantly associated with drug resistance.Among the 253 patients treated with new AED, 48 were seizure free, and only 14 were previously classified as drug resistant.
