Abstract
These preliminary results indicate that anemia due to hereditary ovalocytosis is produced by both peripheral hemolysis and ineffective erythropoiesis. Studies on the family members are in progress with the aim of evaluating whether functional features of erythropoiesis allow hereditary ovalocytosis to be recognized as a genetic disorder distinct from previously recognized types of HE.
