Summary. Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs) from pattern-reversal stimulation of each quadrant of the visual field were recorded from normal subjects. Aim of this study was to verify the capability of some modern electrophysiological techniques in localizing the cerebral sources of the responses evoked from stimulation of any single quadrant of the visual field. VEPs were analyzed by means of two brain mapping techniques (voltage maps and current source density maps) and of spatio-temporal analysis of equivalent dipoles. Current source density (CSD) maps proved to be as accurate as the voltage maps in localizing VEP generators, whereas dipole analysis provided the best discrimination of the different cortical sources activated from stimulation of each visual quadrant. In addition, VEP were decomposed into three spatio-temporal equivalent dipoles that could reflect the activation of visual areas V1, V2 and V3/V4.
