Abstract

Since February 1978 to May 1985 we observed 115 cases with Infantile Spasms (IS). In all of them we surveyed for metabolic and viral diseases and we performed a brain CT scan. Cases without a clear etiological factor and with an abnormal psychomotor development preceding the spasms were considered of unknown etiology. We have classified our cases as following: idiopathic 18 cases (16%), prenatal 34 cases (29.5%), perinatal 32 cases (28%), postnatal 3 cases (2.5%), unknown etiology 28 cases (24%). The prenatal factors resulted: phakomatoses 13 cases, malformations 13 cases, chromosomal abnormalities 8 cases. We haven't found any metabolic disease. The perinatal factors were all severe and well proved. Among postnatal causes we have not included the vaccinations as they have only a chronologic relation with IS.
