Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a type of cardiac arrhythmias, more and more diffuse because of adult people average age growth. The presence of cardiac thrombi and the coincidental systemic or cerebral thromboembolism is an usual complication. To evaluate neuropathologic lesions we have made autoptic studies in 22 individuals suffering from AF. During cerebral examination we observed 5 cerebral infarctions, 1 haemorrhage and 5 ancient-dated infarctions. Eventually we underline the high relevance of AF in cerebral infarction pathogenesis, suggesting attent monitoring and, if necessary, therapy in individuals suffering from AF.
