Abstract

The nutritional importance of lactose is well known. Generally this is excluded from the dietary regimen of children with athrophic intestinal mucosa. We studied 15 patients aged from 9 months to 12 years and with athrophic intestinal mucosa by means of the Breath H2 test in order to evaluate the real absorption of different percentages of lactose. 11 patients (73%) showed a good tolerance to 0,6-1 g/kg/body weight of lactose. The dietary intake of lactose must be carefully evaluated by the Breath H2 test in every child with athrophic intestinal mucosa.
