Blood donations performed at Transfusion Service of Galliera Hospital in Genoa during 1995 (no. 8,937) and 1996 (no. 8,703) were screened for HCV antibodies using 3rd-generation diagnostic kits supplemented by Ortho- Clinical Diagnostics (solid phase coated with c22, c33, c100 and NS5 antigens). The prevalence of anti-HCV reactive donations was constantly of 0.6%. During these 2 years, the 0.2% of all donations was positive or indeterminate at supplementary test, using RIBA 3 (Ortho). The PCR test (supplemented by Roche) was positive either in 8/9 donors having a complete RIBA pattern and in 1 donor indeterminate at RIBA test with only anti-NS5. This result underlines the importance of the presence of NS5 antigen in the kit used in blood donation screening.
