Expression of proopiomelanocortin and corticotrophin releasing factor mRNA in human lymphocytes and neuroblastomas

Abstract

In-situ hybridisation histochemistry was performed to screen several neuroblastoma and lymphocyte cell lines for the presence of corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) mRNA transcripts. Both CRF and POMC mRNA expression was found in neuroblastoma and lymphocytes, but there was a differential expression of both transcripts depending on the cell line. Northern blot analysis revealed that neuroblastoma contained either a 1.2 Kb or a 9.5 Kb POMC mRNA-like transcript but not both. Lymphocytes were found only to express a POMC-like mRNA that corresponded to around 9.5 Kb in size.
