Abstract. Extramedullary haematopoiesis within the thyroid cartilage. Problems/Objectives: Primitive non-neoplastic
lesions of the laryngeal framework are quite rare. The aim of this study is to discuss the clinical and radiologic features of
an incidental finding of a focus of extramedullary haematopoiesis within the thyroid cartilage. The diagnostic-therapeutic
workup that allowed us to reach a correct diagnosis is described.
Methodology: We report the case of a woman incidentally diagnosed with a cystic lesion of the thyroid cartilage. We
describe the diagnostic workup and treatment of this rare case.
Result: Fine-needle aspiration cytology of a thyroid cartilage lesion revealed a population of normal haematopoietic precursors.
Control CT scans at 6 and 12 months after diagnosis showed no changes in the radiological findings of the lesion.
Conclusions: Ectopic haematopoietic tissue should be considered in the differential diagnosis when dealing with primitive
lesions of laryngeal framework. Fine-needle aspiration cytology should be part of the diagnostic workup, as it helps
to reach the correct diagnosis, thereby avoiding unnecessary surgical procedures.
