FRAME: A framework for the development of GUI-based hospital information system applications

Abstract

This paper presents FRAME (FRamework for Applications in the Medical Environment), an object-oriented framework designed for the development of integrated and GUI-based applications in Hospital Information System environments. The project has given special attention both to an object-oriented approach and to the compliance with design principles and standards of Microsoft Windows, that are considered crucial steps toward the development of more reliable, consistent and integrated applications. A further purpose of the FRAME project was to build an efficient software engineering environment that improved quality and productivity during the whole software life-cycle. After a summary of the main characteristics of the development process and the description of some standards employed in designing FRAME's user interface, FRAME's architecture is described and some fundamental software components are presented.
