Abstract
Recent progress concerning mechanisms of acute renal failure (ARF) provides interesting new possibilities for a preventive action of furosemide in ARF. This review summarizes the pathogenesis of ARF and the role of furosemide in various experimental models of ARF. Subsequently, the uncontrolled and controlled clinical experience with the use of furosemide (with or without dopamine) in prerenal azotemia and manifest ARF is reviewed.
