Abstract

Krabbe disease (globoid cell leukodystrophy) is an early onset progressive ezncephalopathy due to deficiency of galactocerebroside-beta-galactosidase. CT and MR imaging show involvement (demyelination) of white matter and of thalami. CT findings are somewhat earlier, with a typical hyperdensity of thalami and cerebellum. We performed cranial us in 2 infants with Krabbe disease. We found increased echogenicity of periventricular white matter and of thalamic regions. This US pattern, when associated with typical clues of Krabbe disease, may be helpful for an early diagnosis.
