The 1977 meeting of the 'Italian Society for Inborn Errors of Metabolism' had the aim to stimulate a multidisciplinary approach to the study of glycoproteins and mucopolysaccharides in normal and pathological conditions. Glycoproteins have drawn growing attention in the last years due to the relevant cellular events in which they are thought to be implicated. The role of specific glycoproteins in the uptake of lysosomal enzymes and in the processes of calcification and of mitochondrial calcium transport is discussed. Other papers give an up to date view on the relationship between glycoproteins and clotting factors. Recent progress in the biochemical diagnosis of mucopolysaccharidosis and in the clinical and biochemical aspects of l-Cell disease are the main topics held in the section devoted to chemical pathology. This collection of the scientific papers will convey a comprehensive survey of the function and metabolism of glycoproteins and mucopolysaccharides and further stimulate collaboration between biochemists and pathologists in a better knowledge of these substances in health and disease.
