Abstract

Serum samples of 291 healthy subjects working in two hospitals in Rome were examined for the HB antigen by radioimmunologic method. Higher positivity figures were found among nurses and servants working where a high circulation of hepatitis B virus existed: wards and laboratories of a hospital for infectious diseases, cardiosurgery and intensive care units. Positivities for HB Ag were frequent, above all in males over 20 yr, smokers and those working less than one yr in the same place. The authors' results appear to support the hypothesis that intra hospital infections of HB virus may also be induced by the oral route.
