Aim. Stable bone/hip prosthetic fixation is a prerequisite for achieving optimal long-term results. Hip prostheses fixation can be achived by cemented, uncemented, or biological means. The aim of this study was to review our results of experimental and clinical studies regarding surface coatings in prosthetic fixation and to perform a literature review. Methods. A literature review of principal experimental and clinical studies was performed. Results. The efficacy of hydroxyapatite surface coating of hip prostheses was shown both in experimental and clinical studies. Conclusion. The analysis of the literature confirms that surface coating with high crystalline hydroxyapatite improves osteointegration and mechanical stability in both smooth or porous-coated hip prostheses.
