Abstract

Introduction. A prevention programme has been carried out in Milan, in the Prison of San Vittore. Methods. A questionnaire has been administered, before and after the prevention course, to 396 prisoners divided in groups of 12 units. This questionnaire was given to prisoners to appraise any change on information level, on behaviour in situation of risk infection and on prejudice against seropositives. Results and conclusion. The information of prisoners has resulted lower than in general population. Nevertheless, after prevention course, the information increased to 9%. According to a fair prevention level, the 85, 6% of prisoners has reached it. After the prevention course, it has been a reduction to 12.6% about hypothetical risk situation. So 45% of the subjects gave a suitable preventive behaviour. On the contrary the prevention programme has been not affected about the prejudice against seropositive. In conclusion about HIV test, 2/3 of the subjects declared to have submitted to the HIV test and 6, 9% was seropositive. These results agree with other studies on prisoners population, but are very far from the results of general population: the 0, 4%.
