Abstract

In April 2000 a program of Home Care (HC) was activated in the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Department of G. Gaslini Children Hospital in Genova. Children in stable non critical conditions needing iv therapies, parenteral nutrition administration, transfusional support, blood examinations, and central venous catheter (CVC) management, as well as terminally ill children needing palliative and support therapies were considered eligible to be admitted to HC. After one year of activity 45 children, aged one month-19 years (median three years), needing iv therapies and blood tests in 32 cases, CVC use training in five, and palliative cures in eight, were treated at home. The median duration of the assistance for each child was 19 days (range 1172). A median of four patients per week were assisted for a total of 1364 days. A total of 881 accesses at home replaced 551 and 330 out-patient and in-patient days of hospitalisation.
