Abstract

Analysis of a series of population studies, undertaken with serological tests and checked with biopsies: 13,145 in the USA (anti-endomysium antibodies); prevalence in children, 1: 320; children with symptoms, 1:25; in adults, 1:149; adults with symptoms, 1:68; 1st degree relatives of CD patients, 1:21. 3,188 schoolchildren in Trieste, Italy (transglutaminase): prevalence of 1:96. Pernambuco, Brazil (anti-transglutaminase antibodies): prevalence in children hospitalised for various pathologies 1:21. Coeliac disease is today the most widespread genetic illness in children.
