Abstract

The presence of antiplatelet antibodies (Ab) and immune-complexes (IC) was investigated at diagnosis in 41 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), 23 adults and 18 children. Different laboratory assays (platelet suspension immunofluorescence test, Fab test. polymorphonuclear neutrophil immunohistological technique, C1q agglutination inhibition test) which take into account different properties of Ab and IC were utilized. Our data point out that the vast majority of patients with ITP have antiplatelet Ab and that many of them also present circulating IC, thus suggesting that IC may result from the interaction between platelet associated antigens and specific antiplatelet Ab.
