Abstract

PUVA-therapy is an effective procedure in clearing cutaneous lesions of mycosis fungoides (MF), as well as in inducing the regression of the dermal infiltrate. However, only a few studies have been performed about the effects of PUVA on circulating T lymphocytes. In this work circulating T cell subsets were studied in 10 patients affected by non tumoral MF. Tests on CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes and the CD4/CD8 ratio were carried out on samples of peripheral blood before starting the therapy and after 1 month, 3 months and 6 months of treatment respectively. Complete clearing of the lesions was achieved in all the patients. A significant reduction of the percentage of CD3+ cells (p+: 62.5% vs 75.7%). The impairment was almost entirely due to a reduction in CD4+ cells (42% vs 51.4%), which, however, was not statistically significant.
