Abstract

Regional renal hypothermia can be carried out by simple surface cooling, arterial or venous perfusion with cold solutions, and pelvic caliceal irrigation with cold solutions. Advantages and disadvantages of each method are carefully reviewed and discussed, focusing especially on the technical problems. It is concluded that in case of long term ischemia, the method of choice is transarterial perfusion with balloon catheter, when possible; in case of short term ischemia surface cooling seems to be the best solution. In children the best solution is to use inosine.
