Abstract

Contrast-enhanced subtraction dynamic MRI of the breast is an extremely sensitive technique with relatively limited specificity. So, MR imaging is not recommended for the characterization of breast lesions detected by mammography or sonography. Routine indications of breast MR imaging are: breast silicone implants (intracapsular rupture), suspicion of local relapse in treated breasts, abnormal clinical findings with normal standard imaging studies, search for primary breast tumors in patients with axillary nodal metastases. Routine MR staging of breast cancer implies the ability to realize MR imaging-guided localization or biopsies. MR screening in women with genetic predisposition or high-risk for breast cancer seems to be very promising (research protocols).
