Abstract

Background: Appropriate laboratory utilization is a cornerstone of optimal medical practice. Information Technology is an essential tool for assessing appropriateness in the Total Testing Process. Method: We have reviewed the role and importance of Information Technology in improving appropriateness in pre-, intra-, and post-analytical phases. Results: Information Technology is an essential support in all processes related to the patient clinical management. In particular, it plays a crucial role in improving the informative value of laboratory data, increasing security and reducing errors. Conclusions: Information Technology significantly contributes to promote appropriateness and safety, facilitating the clinical decision-making.
