Intermediate species in thermal reactions between mixed ethylenediamine-o-phenanthroline cobalt(III) complexes and ammonium salts in the solid phase

Abstract

Solidsolid thermal reaction, in the range 140-180°C, between NH4Cl or NH4NO3 and some cobalt(III) complexes containing ligands with only nitrogen as donor atoms, are reported. The products are separated by thin layer chromatography and characterized by direct spectrophotometry, scanning the plates after TLC. Only in the case of [Co-(o-phen)2en]Y3 (Y = Cl-, NO- 3) is an effect of NH4Cl found. The formation of two intermediate species is evidenced: the first, cis-Co(o-phen)2Cl+ 2, is obtained by substitution of an ethylenediamine molecule by chloride ions; the other, Co(o-phen)3+ 3, by subsequent displacement of chloride ions by the free o-phenanthroline coming from intial decomposition of the complexes. On heating in the presence of NH4NO3 the complexes do not undergo any changes. The reactivity order is: [Co(en)3]Y3 ≅ [Co(o-phen)(en)2]Y3 <[Co(o-phen)3]Y3 <[Co(o-phen)2en]Y3.
