The aim of this study is to evaluate whether intra-operative blood salvage is a useful technique in general surgery. The authors present 59-patients' data and they analyze blood-saved volumes and surgical diseases in which blood salvage was employed. Then the authors discuss controversies about the use of this procedure in oncologic surgery. They underline IOBS's rule during emergency surgery and they propose to use this procedure also in oncologic surgery if the risks of this application are explained.
