The search for new antiepileptic drugs (AED) is justified by the need to improve the efficacy and tolerability of available agents. In recent years, several new AED have reached or approached the marketing stage. Although only a minority of patients with epilepsy resistant to conventional AED can be completely controlled with the innovative drugs, the new agents discussed in this Symposium represent valuable additional tools which can be usefully exploited to improve the quality of patients' care.
