Abstract
Ion release in stable hip arthroplasties was analyzed using metal-on-metal bearings on a larger series of patients with stable metal-on-metal implants. Twenty subjects were enrolled in the study for Cr and Co dosage. Co and Cr levels in the medium-term subjects were not decreased in comparison with the short-term values and were significantly higher than in all other subjects. The results indicate that metal-on-metal bearings produce a significantly high systemic release of cobalt and chromium into the bloodstream.
