Fetal ascites may be either isolated or part of generalized hydrops. While the prenatal diagnosis of such conditions is easy by ultrasounds, the underlying causal agent often remains uncertain. Fetal ascites may also represent the presenting sign in complex malformative syndromes, whose prognosis is generally dismal. The clinical, ultrasonographic and pathological findings in six fetuses with ascites were evaluated. There were 3 cases of generalized hydrops and 3 of isolated ascites. Are discussed the causes and diagnostic features of generalized fetal hydrops and isolated fetal ascite.
