Abstract

To evaluate the efficacy of Lactobacillus GG in functional abdominal bloating treatment. Lactobacillus GG 300 × 109 bacteria tid for 14 days or placebo, in a double blind, randomized, cross-over protocol were administered in nineteen patients suffering from functional abdominal bloating, according with Roma II criteria. The severity of bloating and flatulence was evaluated by a visual analogue scale, breath hydrogen excretion was evaluated by an H2 breath test after lactulose. Both Lactobacillus GG and placebo proved to be significantly active in decreasing bloating, but the remission induced by Lactobacillus GG turned out to be significantly higher than that induced by placebo. Only Lactobacillus GG significantly reduced flatulence. Nor Lactobacillus GG, neither placebo modified cumulative breath H2 escretion. Lactobacillus GG proved to be active in functional abdominal bloating treatment.
