A differential method based on the use of only one resistance strain gage, by which means it is possible to measure the coefficient of linear expansion, is examined. A particular choice of the transducer is proposed and from the experimental results obtained on aluminum and Invar, in the range of 20 divided by 200 degree C, a maximum value of inaccuracy associated with the measurements is determined. It falls between the uncertainty of the traditional dilatometers and that of the data furnished by the manuals.
