A questionnaire was sent to 88 centres in 23 countries (Table I) in an attempt to record their day-to-day behaviour and to reach consensus regarding the long-term treatment of duodenal ulcer disease. The choice of centres was dictated by those authors who had published clinical studies on this topic; 62% (n = 54) completed and returned the questionnaire. The survey thus represents the current practice of many major centres in the long-term treatment for duodenal ulcer. Some answers need to be interpreted cautiously because certain drugs (colloidal bismuth subcitrate, sucralfate, omeprazole) are not on the market in all countries or are not registered for the long-term treatment of duodenal ulcer.
