Abstract

This paper presents the results of a multicenter clinical trial which defines the reference range, in terms of percent and absolute count, for lymphocyte subset in healthy adults. We studied the distribution of lymphocyte subsets CD3+, CD3+CD4+, CD3+CD8+, CD3+DR+, CD19+, DR+, CD16+ and/or CD56+CD3- in 419 Italian healthy adults, most of them were periodic blood donors. In order to standardize the pre-analytical and analytical phases some recommendation was given to each laboratory; so, we obtained an high degree of concordance between observations at each site. Another aim of this study was to reveal differences in lymphocyte subset due to some variables like sex, age and smoke. Finally, we compared the data of leucocyte formula obtained by the haematological counters and by cytometer.
