Abstract

Macrophage activation is a crucial process for innate immunity as well as for tissue and metabolic homeostasis. In this issue of Immunity, Xue etal. (2014) extend our knowledge on macrophage activation and identify unique functional states, thus expanding the M1-M2 paradigm.
