Abstract

The incidence of bronchial asthma is increasing and in the last ten years the associated mortality rate has also risen rapidly. Any doctor may be faced with the treatment of an asthmatic patient under respiratory distress when it becomes necessary to initiate a prompt and aggressive therapy. Starting from epidemiology, pathophysiology and treatment, this chapter deals with the challenge of managing airways and ventilation in case of a severe and acute asthma attack or of status asthmaticus, a term that describes severe and persistent asthma.
