Developments in the cisplatin-based chemotherapeutic associations has created some interest also for gastric cancer patients. It was hoped that the dismal prognosis of inoperable patients would improve by an increase in the number of patients brought to curative surgery, and by the efficacy of such therapies in adjuvant situations. This paper reviews several aspects of chemotherapy in gastric cancer. The overall conclusion is that these treatments can be applied in selected advanced cases but should not be used in the majority of patients who have been submitted to a potentially curative surgery.
