Abstract
New scientific data according to melanoma have approached a better understanding of the nature of this tumor. Novel diagnostic methods, such as dermoscopy, have been demonstrated to increase the early diagnosis of melanoma. Other traditional therapeutic methods, such as radical surgery of the primary tumor and lymph node dissection, have been replaced by less aggressive surgical protocols and sentinel lymph node biopsy. For metastasizing melanoma, new chemotherapy protocols and immunotherapy have been proposed, whereas the role of vaccines is still under investigation. In this article an evidence-based overview on recent epidemiologic, clinic, diagnostic and therapeutic data with regard to melanoma is presented.
