The authors, after a review of the bibliography, present a case of Merkel cell tumor. It is an infrequent skin tumor arising from the dermis which grows slowly and can sometimes be aggressive with metastases both to the regional lymphatic glands and generalized. The clinical features are not specific, and diagnosis can only be made by histology or better still by immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study. The treatment is surgical, with wide excision. The necessity for preventive lymphatic glands dissection is controversial. In some cases radio- and chemotherapy have been used, although their effectiveness is not proved.
