Methods for 3D-conformal radiotherapy: Reality and perspectives

Abstract

The possibility that increasing local control will prolong long term survival in some tumours has created new interests in external radiotherapy with conventional radiation beams (using photons and/or electrons) thanks to the availability of 3D treatment planning optimization procedures. In this paper we illustrate the aims of three dimensional conformal radiation therapy, the methods to optimize treatment techniques and the equipments for high precision radiotherapy. Reports showing the advantages of conformal techniques to improve tumor coverage and to spare normal tissues and preliminary results concerning dose-escalation clinical trials will be given too. Finally, we briefly describe the Italian experience in the fields of treatment planning optimization and conformal irradiation techniques.
