Two decades ago, therapy for locally advanced rectal cancer included surgery followed by additional therapy or fluouracil chemotherapy. Vice versa, the last decade we assisted to grest advances, with a current enthusiasm for preoperative radiochemotherapy that increases the chances of tumor down-staging and down-sizing, and facilitates sphincter-sparing surgical procedures.
