Kidney stones are not only responsible for painful colics: they can lead to renal failure. It is important to diagnose the type of stone to start appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis and dietary measures. Spiral computed tomography is becoming the gold standard for conclusive images, but because of its cost it can't be regarded as the first choice investigation. In case the stone does not pass spontaneously, endoscopic urologic treatment or extracorporeal lithotripsy need to be considered.
