New device for determining the level of charge in batteries

Abstract

A novel method to determine the level of battery charge, based on an energy balance, has been developed. The method has been tested on a lead-acid cell also appropriate to any other secondary cell. The energy balance includes thermal energy received/produced in the charge/discharge processes. An adiabatic calorimeter has been used to measure the heat released. Several charge/discharge tests have been carried out to check the energy balance method and the repeatability of the results.
