On-line monitoring of benzene air concentration while driving in traffic by isotopic dilution GC/MS

Abstract

In the last decade, data on the exposure of the general population to benzene, a known human carcinogen, has been more available in many situations. Despite this large amount of data, there is a lack of precise figures since there was no analytical tool to measure on-line trace amounts of benzene in micro-environmental exposure (driving in various traffic conditions, during refuelling, parking, etc.). Thus, a cryofocussing GC-MS monitoring system (a system that has monitored benzene with high accuracy and precision), which uses an ″on-line″ isotopic dilution technique and considers the variability in instrumental performance and in sampling, adsorption and desorption efficiencies, was modified (in the sampling enrichment) to evaluate a zero-emission vehicle FIAT Ducato Elettra 43 kw electric truck. With the method's high selectivity, due to the selective adsorption-desorption parameters (temperatures, adsorbent material, and mass) and to the intrinsic MS selectivity, inter-analysis time was reduced to 4 min, providing almost real time information and allowing the measurement of transients (in 4 min windows) in concentration levels. In-vehicle benzene and toluene levels in a parking lot showed, not the emissions from various car models, but how in-vehicle VOC levels could suddenly vary in normal situations. The data showed how easily in-vehicle concentrations from fixed-site monitoring could be underestimated.
