In this paper, 26 patients (15 males, 11 females; age 4.1-17.5 years) with diagnosed drug-resistant epilepsy were studied to evaluate the possible presence of an undiagnosed parathyroid disorder (hypoparathyroidism or pseudohypoparathyroidism). We found two cases of hypoparathyroidism and one case of pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ib (11.5% of examined cases). 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D3 treatment determined the resolution of seizure episodes and the stop of the anticonvulsant treatment. Our data confirm that some patients with drug-resistant seizures are affected by undiagnosed parathyroid disorders and that specific treatment determines the disappearance of seizures.
