Abstract

Paroxysmal dyskinesias are a heterogenous group of disorders manifesting as episodes of abnormal involuntary hyperkinetic movements. Paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesias are characterized by short lasting attacks precipitated by movements; paroxysmal exertion-induced dyskinesias by attacks triggered by prolonged exercise; paroxysmal nonkinesigenic dyskinesias by longer duration attacks not precipitated by movements. Most cases of paroxysmal dyskinesias are idiopathic. The gene for the familial forms of non kinesigenic paroxysmal dyskinesia is linked to a locus on chromosome 2q. At least two clinically autosomal dominant disorders are characterized by episodic ataxia and the genes responsible have been mapped to chromosomes 12 and 19. Paroxysmal dyskinesias and intermittent ataxia belong to a family of diseases due to disorders of ion channels.
