Abstract

Twenty-one children with spastic diplegia, born prematurely, have been evaluated at the mean age of 8.5 by MRI in order to correlate the radiological findings of periventricular leukomalacia to specific cognitive disorders assessed according to Wechsler Intelligence Scales. A statistically significant correlation was found between severe ventricular enlargement, reduction of the white matter, involvement of the posterior part of the corpus callosum, involvement of optic radiations and the scores of tests requiring the visual function. The demonstration of these abnormalities may allow an carlier diagnosts of cognitive disorders, increasing the specificity of the treatment.
